Frequently asked questions

Here you'll find answers to some of the most common questions and snags our students and members face during their metalsmithing projects. From tricky solders to achieving the perfect polish, we're here to help.

Why isn't my solder flowing?

This is a common issue! Several factors can prevent solder from flowing correctly, including insufficient heat, dirty metal, incorrect flux application, or using the wrong solder for the job. Ensure your metal is clean, fluxed properly, and that you're applying consistent heat to the piece not directly to the solder itself.

How do I get my metal to shine?

Achieving a high polish requires thorough preparation. Start with progressively finer grits of sandpaper or abrasive pads to remove all scratches from previous steps. Don't skip grits! Once scratches are removed, use appropriate polishing compounds and buffs, ensuring each compound is completely removed before moving to the next. Cleanliness is key for a brilliant shine.

My piece is warping during heating, what can I do?

Warping often occurs due to uneven heating. Try to heat your entire piece gently and gradually, rather than focusing the flame on one spot.  Consider the thickness of your metal; thinner sections are more prone to warping.

How do I prevent firescale?

Firescale, or cupric oxide, forms when copper alloys are heated in the presence of oxygen. To minimize it, use a good flux that protects the metal from oxidation. You can also pickle your piece frequently during heating cycles to remove surface oxides before they penetrate deeper.

How can other members help me troubleshoot?

Our community thrives on shared knowledge! If you have a question or problem, it's likely that others have had it tool.

Post it in our TROUBLESHOOTING discussion forum. Other members (and our experts) can provide insights, share their experiences with similar issues, and offer tips to help you avoid the problem in the future.

What tools or information can help me find answers on my own?

Beyond community discussions, we're building a library of resources to empower your independent problem-solving. Look for upcoming guides, instructional videos, and practical checklists in our Tips, Tricks & Tools section. These resources will cover various metalsmithing techniques and common troubleshooting scenarios.

Where can I share my own troubleshooting tips?

We encourage all members to share their expertise! You can contribute your insights and solutions to the troubleshooting discussion forum. Your experience can be invaluable to someone else facing a similar challenge.
